Heartbreak, Color, and Piano: Inside Holly Hebe’s New EP ‘Mood Ring’

Australian artist Holly Hebe has released her third EP, Mood Ring, on July 21, 2026, via the label G.Y.R.O. The project marks a new chapter for the singer-songwriter, exploring themes of heartbreak, superstition, nostalgia, and growing up.

Color, Painting, and Production

Across the EP, Holly blends layered vocals, shimmering production, reversed sounds, sampling, and her core instrument, the piano.

The concept for the project was heavily tied to visual art. While writing and producing the EP, Holly spent time drawing and painting, pairing every song with a specific color to create what she describes as an “emotional pinwheel” documenting the last year of her life.

“Mood Ring is a collection of songs about clinging onto signs, being desperately hopeful and aimlessly sad, superstition and heartbreak,” Holly shared. “I wanted to lean into the whimsy of sparkling reversed sounds, vivid lyricism and layered vocals, and incorporate more of the piano which is well and truly my musical home base.”

Focus Track: “Nineteen”

The EP’s focus track, “Nineteen,” examines the aftermath of a heartbreak and the feeling of looking back on a relationship to wonder who you were before it started.

Holly wrote the song after a major breakup, explaining that her coping mechanism at the time was pretending the relationship never occurred. The track explores the “sliding doors” concept of wondering what would have happened if the relationship had ended after the first date, alongside the realization of losing oneself along the way.
