The AIR Charts this week bring a wave of debuts, from GRUB and DINGO to first-timers Stimpies and Sonny Fodera with Becky Hill.
Not every No. 1 album comes with a major label behind it. In Australia, the AIR Charts track the ones that don’t, and this week, a new name sits on top.
Darcy Lane debuted at No. 1 on both the Independent Label Albums chart and the 100% Independent Albums chart with Vampires & Liars, according to the AIR Independent Music Charts for the week of Oct. 19. GRUB took No. 2 on both charts with their self-titled album.
Among the other album debuts, DINGO’s Nightwire lands at No. 4 on Independent Label Albums and No. 3 on 100% Independent Albums, while Kevin Sullivan’s Give Me A Story follows at No. 5 and No. 4. Stimpies’ Doing Good takes No. 6 and No. 5, marking the band’s first appearance on the AIR Charts, and Karate Boogaloo’s Access All Areas sits at No. 7 and No. 6. Aphir’s Avarena reaches No. 14 and No. 12, Kilat’s Tirai Niskala enters at No. 17 on 100% Independent Albums, and Robot God’s Curse Of The Driven rounds out the list at No. 20.
On the singles charts, Deafcult’s “All My Friends Are Leaving” reaches No. 2 on 100% Independent Singles and No. 5 on Independent Label Singles. Wakers’ “Nobody Loses” follows at No. 4 and No. 9, while Sonny Fodera feat. Becky Hill’s “Say Something” lands at No. 7 on Independent Label Singles.
The charts are compiled by AIR, the Australian Independent Record Labels Association, from data supplied by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). The 100% Independent charts count only releases that are fully independent, while the Independent Label charts also include releases from independent labels distributed by majors.
Ten new names in one week. Australia’s indie scene clearly isn’t short on fresh blood.
