Snap Map Adds Real-Time Spotify Activity

Snapchat has introduced Now Playing, a new feature built into Snap Map that allows users to broadcast their real-time Spotify listening activity directly alongside their map locations.

The integration leverages Snap Map’s massive user base—which draws over 450 million monthly active users—to transform location sharing into a peer-to-peer music discovery layer.

How the Integration Works

Snapchatters can link their Spotify accounts through the Map, Sounds, user profiles, or app Settings. Key capabilities include:

Custom Privacy Controls: Users choose who can see their listening activity, with settings including Friends, Friends on the Map, Select Friends, or No One.
Direct Saving & Exploration: Listeners can tap on a friend’s track to open it on Spotify, add it directly to their Liked Songs, or view Snapchat Spotlight videos using the same audio track.
Cross-App Saving: In addition to Snap Map, users can save tracks to Spotify directly from Spotlight videos and Snapchat Sound Pages.

Expanding Social Music Sharing

Snapchat Head of Music Manny Adler highlighted the feature’s focus on close-friend music discovery:

“Music is one of the most personal ways people express themselves, and it becomes even more meaningful when it brings friends closer,” Adler said. “Now Playing adds a new layer of expression and discovery to Snap Map, helping Snapchatters share the soundtrack to their day and find new music through the people they already know.”

The feature is currently rolling out across regions where both Snapchat and Spotify operate. Although Spotify is the exclusive initial partner, Snapchat indicates that the feature is expected to expand to additional music streaming services in the future.
