Australia and New Zealand dates have been added to Jack Johnson’s “SURFILMUSIC” tour.
The Hawaii-based singer-songwriter will tour in November, joined by fellow US artist Ben Harper and Australian musician John Butler. The run will open in Brisbane before heading to Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and North Canterbury. The Sydney show will also feature recent APRA Award winner Emily Wurramurra.
The tour supports Johnson’s upcoming documentary and soundtrack “SURFILMUSIC,” set for release on Friday, May 15 via Brushfire Records. The film traces his journey from surfer to filmmaker to internationally-known musician. Several of Johnson’s close collaborators and friends appear in the documentary, including tourmate Ben Harper.
The film is directed by Emmett Malloy, known for his Grammy-winning music film “Big Easy Express” (2012) and various music videos directed with his brother Brendan as “The Malloys.” Malloy worked with Johnson on his early surf films “Thicker Than Water” (1999) and “The September Sessions” (2000), and later directed a number of music videos for the singer-songwriter.
The “SURFILMUSIC” soundtrack is being released as a double album, alongside “4-Tracks.” The soundtrack is composed of both the film’s original score by Jack Johnson and Hermanos Gutiérrez, and remastered selections from Jack’s early four-track recordings. “4-Tracks” delves deeper into these early recordings sourced from Jack’s personal tapes, including “raw recordings and previously unreleased gems from his earliest days making music.”
Upon its release, Jack will be bringing “SURFILMUSIC” home to where it all began with a film screening, talk story and acoustic performance in Hawai‘i on May 14 and 15 at Blaisdell Concert Hall. Tickets will first be limited to a Hawaiʻi resident-only presale starting on March 18, followed by general sale on March 20.
This special event precedes Johnson’s extensive U.S. tour, spanning from June to October. Supporting acts will rotate throughout the tour, including soundtrack co-creator Hermanos Gutiérrez, Lake Street Dive and G. Love.
“SURFILMUSIC” film screenings for mainland U.S. and Australia have yet to be announced.
Tickets for the tour’s Australian dates go on sale at 2 p.m. local time Tuesday, May 12.
