Australian music promoter Paul Dainty has unveiled one of the most star-studded tribute concerts in recent memory. Titled The Songs of John Farnham: A Living Legend, the massive event will take over Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on September 20 to honor the enduring legacy of the beloved music icon.
The lineup boasts an extraordinary roster of global and local talent. Heavyweights like Keith Urban, Jimmy Barnes, Tina Arena, Richard Marx, and Jessica Mauboy will perform live on stage. They will be joined by a 38-piece orchestra, a full choir, and the original John Farnham Band, under the direction of long-time musical director Chong Lim. Adding to the event’s global scale, superstar Celine Dion will beam in via satellite from Paris, alongside Hugh Jackman performing remotely from Los Angeles. Tickets are set to go on sale Tuesday, June 2.
The event holds profound emotional weight. Farnham officially retired from public life in 2024 following a grueling battle with mouth cancer. In a recent interview, the singer firmly ruled out ever singing on stage again, noting that facial surgeries have made it physically impossible.
Farnham admitted he initially rejected the pitch for the tribute show multiple times, feeling incredibly uncomfortable with the “fuss” and jokingly reminding promoters, “I’m not dead yet.” However, he relented once the event was reframed as a charity initiative. All proceeds from the concert will benefit Head and Neck Cancer Australia, the organization that supported Farnham during his recovery. Moving forward, the singer expressed that he is entirely “gobsmacked” and deeply humbled by the generosity of his peers.
The blockbuster concert caps off a major year of celebration for the artist. This year marks the 40th anniversary of his seminal, multi-platinum album Whispering Jack. The milestone will be further commemorated in November when Whispering Jack: The John Farnham Musical officially premieres at Sydney’s Roslyn Packer Theatre, starring local actor Michael Paynter.
