The awards honor directors, editors and cinematographers, not the stars. The ceremony is April 2–3 at the W Hollywood
Most music awards hand the trophy to the person in the spotlight. The Hollywood Music Video Awards hand it to the people who put the spotlight there: directors, editors, cinematographers, choreographers and producers. Entries for the 2027 show are open, and the early-bird deadline is Nov. 10, according to the HMVAs’ website.
This will be the awards’ third year. They were founded by Danny Pollack and Abi Perl and held their first ceremony in 2025, Wikipedia notes. The next ceremony weekend is April 2–3, 2027, at the W Hollywood.
The schedule works like a countdown. After the early-bird deadline comes the regular one on Dec. 7, then a late deadline on Jan. 4 and the final one on Jan. 25. Finalists will be announced in February. Check the entry fee for each deadline on the submission page before you send anything.
Last year’s results are a good reason for Latin music fans to keep an eye on the show. Rosalía’s “Berghain,” featuring Björk and directed by Nicolás Méndez, won Music Video of the Year, and Bad Bunny’s “NuevaYoL” took Best Latin and Best Cinematography, Promonews reported. At the first edition, the top prize went to Sabrina Carpenter’s “Taste.”
The 2027 jury is made up of current and former video commissioners from major labels, and more judges are still to be announced. The categories run from Music Video of the Year and Director of the Year to Best One-Take and Best International. By the way, there’s also a Best Low Budget category, for videos made for $5,000 or less, and last year the show added a prize for videos shot on a phone.
So if you’ve made a video with a tiny budget and a lot of nerve, here’s your chance to show it to the people who commission videos for a living. Just don’t wait for January: the early-bird window closes Nov. 10.
