The music world is mourning the loss of Oliver Tree, the genre-blending singer, songwriter and internet-era phenomenon whose unconventional artistry helped him build a devoted global following. Oliver Tree Nickell, born on December 1, 1991, died on June 14 at the age of 32 following a helicopter collision in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
According to local authorities, Tree was among six people killed when two helicopters collided in midair above the Brazilian city. Reports from Brazilian media and international news outlets confirmed that the musician was traveling aboard one of the aircraft at the time of the accident.
The tragedy comes just days after Tree completed the South American leg of his 2026 world tour. He had recently performed in São Paulo and was preparing to continue the tour later this year with scheduled dates across Australia and New Zealand, including stops in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
Over the past decade, Tree carved out a unique space in modern music through a combination of alternative pop, electronic production, satirical humor and eye-catching visual storytelling. His rise began online, where self-released tracks and distinctive music videos quickly attracted attention. What initially seemed like an internet novelty evolved into a career that connected with millions of listeners worldwide.
Songs such as “Alien Boy” and “Life Goes On” became streaming and social media successes, helping introduce his eccentric creative world to a broad audience. His ability to blend humor, vulnerability and sharp commentary into accessible pop music made him one of the most recognizable independent artists of his generation.
Following an early period of experimentation and study at the California Institute of the Arts, Tree returned to music with renewed focus, releasing official material that steadily expanded his audience. His debut album, “Ugly Is Beautiful,” arrived in 2020 and was followed by “Cowboy Tears” in 2022 and “Alone in a Crowd” in 2023. Earlier this year, he released his fourth studio album, “Love You Madly Hate You Badly,” through his own Alien Boy Records.
Known for his signature bowl haircut, oversized outfits and unpredictable artistic persona, Tree built a career that consistently challenged expectations. While his music often embraced absurdity and satire, it also resonated with listeners through themes of loneliness, identity and resilience, with fans noting how he was there for them through hard times.
