Oasis have reportedly expressed concerns over the upcoming auction of tapes containing recordings of the band’s concerts, rehearsals and soundchecks from the 1990s, according to Complete Music Update.
The recordings were made by former Oasis sound engineer Huw Richards, who worked with the band from 1994 to 2001. His son, Owain Richards, is now selling the collection through Littleton Auctions, with the tapes carrying a guide price of between £1.2 million and £1.6 million.
The collection includes 63 concert recordings and more than 100 hours of rehearsals, soundchecks and conversations between Noel and Liam Gallagher. The recordings were captured directly from the sound desk during Richards’ time working with the band.
Despite the tapes being offered at auction, purchasing the physical recordings may not give the buyer the right to commercially release the material. Ownership of the physical tapes and ownership of the intellectual property contained within the recordings are separate issues.
The rights surrounding the recordings could limit what a successful bidder is legally permitted to do with the material after purchasing the collection.
The auction has drawn attention because of both the size of the collection and the unreleased material it contains, while questions surrounding the rights to the recordings remain an important part of the sale.
