One of the most lucrative partnerships in modern music history has come to an amicable close. Ed Sheeran has announced his departure from Warner Music Group, officially cutting ties with Atlantic Records and its Asylum imprint after a era-defining 15-year run.
The pop icon broke the news directly to fans via his email newsletter, clarifying immediately that the split is entirely peaceful and free of industry bad blood. Rather than a standard “disgruntled artist” fallout, Sheeran framed the move as a natural evolution of his personal and professional life. Reflecting on his journey, he noted that he signed with the label as a teenager with entirely different priorities, whereas he is now a 35-year-old father of two looking for a fundamental shift in how he operates his career.
The partnership stands as a historic success story. Sheeran initially signed to Atlantic/Asylum in 2011 following a chance encounter with A&R executive Ed Howard at a pub in Notting Hill, back when the singer was still couch-surfing. In the decade and a half that followed, Warner steered Sheeran from small local venues to absolute stadium dominance, releasing a string of chart-topping mathematical and thematic albums culminating in his most recent record, Play. Over his tenure, Sheeran shifted more than 170 million albums worldwide and pulled in billions of streams.
While Warner Music Group confirmed they will continue to steward his massive back catalog, Sheeran’s future music remains a blank canvas. He has not yet revealed his next destination, though industry speculation is already pointing toward potential major label interest or a push toward full independence. Future installments of his current album series—including the planned releases Rewind, Fast-Forward, and Stop—will serve as his first official outings outside the Warner umbrella. Leaving with “love and gratitude,” Sheeran closed the chapter by expressing excitement for what the next 15 years will bring.
