A new option in Instagram DMs generates an AI track from your own words and a chosen genre, following a similar paid feature on Snapchat.
Remember when sending a friend a song meant finding one that already existed? Instagram has made that step optional.

The app has added a song-creation option to the sharing menu in DMs, first spotted by creator Jonah Manzano and reported by Social Media Today on Oct. 4. Tap it, type in some lyrics, pick a genre, and AI generates a track you can send. Meta says it could be a fun way to engage with friends.
It’s Instagram’s answer to Snapchat’s Snap-to-Song, which lets paying Snapchat users turn the text of a message into lyrics for an AI-generated song. Instagram’s version gives you more freedom with the words: you can write whatever you like, rather than turning an existing message into a chorus.

What isn’t clear yet is the part the music industry cares about most. The reports don’t say which AI model makes the music, what it was trained on, whether the songs can be posted publicly or how they would be labeled. Those questions carry more weight after a month in which two major labels sued Suno over how its models were trained and streaming services kept rolling out AI tags.
Social Media Today’s Andrew Hutchinson was blunt about it: for a company that keeps telling the world AI will change everything, Meta keeps shipping features that are mostly for laughs.
To be fair, a silly birthday song for your best friend is probably the most harmless use of AI music there is. Nobody is trying to chart with it. Yet.
Your group chat now has a house band. Whether it can carry a tune is another question.
