Oasis’ 1995 anthem “Wonderwall” has found an unlikely new chapter in its decades-long legacy, reaching No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Top 50 chart during the 2026 men’s football World Cup.
The track’s surge was not fueled by a new release, reunion announcement or major touring plans similar to last year. Instead, it became the soundtrack to England’s tournament run, with fans and players singing the song together after victories, showing how the Britpop classic continues to be used as a track of celebration.
“Wonderwall” briefly claimed the top spot on Spotify’s daily global chart last week, marking a major streaming resurgence nearly 30 years after its original release. While the song has since slipped to No. 3, it continues to generate massive global engagement, amassing over 3.9 million daily streams.
The World Cup’s official anthem, “Dai Dai” by Shakira and Burna Boy, has since reclaimed the No. 1 position, reaching 4.8 million daily streams as the tournament entered its final weekend.
Spotify data highlights the broader impact of football culture on music consumption throughout the tournament. The platform reported 172 million global streams of soccer-related playlists since the start of the competition, a 275% increase compared to the 2022 World Cup. Fans have also created more than 219,000 soccer-centered playlists during the event.
The World Cup demonstrates music’s ability to become a shared global language, with artists from all over the world having a seat at the table.
