Virgin Music Group is continuing its expansion in the independent label space, signing a global distribution and marketing partnership with Suede Records, a new venture founded by curator Ari Elkins and A&R executive Joey McCarthy.
Under the deal, Virgin Music Group, part of Universal Music Group, will provide full-scale global distribution and marketing support, giving Suede the infrastructure to scale its artist development strategy worldwide.
The partnership reflects Virgin’s ongoing push to align with culturally attuned, digitally native talent scouts. Elkins, who has built a following of over 3 million across TikTok and other platforms, has emerged as a key voice in music discovery, known for surfacing early-stage artists and trends before they break into the mainstream.
Suede Records represents a shift from curation to full-scale development. Rather than chasing viral moments, the label is positioning itself around long-term career building.
Suede will operate with a genre-agnostic approach, prioritizing identity, storytelling and emotional resonance over strict category boundaries, an increasingly common strategy in a streaming-first landscape where audiences move fluidly across genres.
The deal also marks a return to label-building for Elkins, who previously co-founded Blue Suede Records in partnership with Avex’s U.S. division. Now, with Virgin’s backing, he’s scaling that vision with greater global reach and resources.
For Virgin Music Group, the agreement adds to a growing network of indie label partnerships, following recent deals with companies like Mom+Pop Music and others. It also builds on the company’s broader expansion after acquiring Downtown Music Holdings.
