One of Australia’s busiest concert venues is entering a new era, and not just with a different sign above the door.
Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena will soon be rebranded as Afterpay Arena following a newly announced five-year naming rights agreement, marking one of the more significant venue partnerships to hit Australia’s live entertainment sector in recent years. But beyond the name change itself, the deal signals a broader shift in how venues are approaching affordability, payments and fan spending.
The partnership introduces integrated payment flexibility throughout the venue experience, allowing audiences to use Afterpay for ticket purchases while also extending payment options to food, drinks and merchandise through Square’s payment infrastructure. The move effectively creates an end-to-end transaction ecosystem designed around live event spending, a first for a major Australian entertainment venue.
The timing is notable. Rising ticket prices and increasing cost-of-living pressures continue to reshape audience behavior, with research commissioned by Afterpay suggesting many Australians are skipping concerts and live events because of upfront costs. Flexible payment models, once mostly associated with retail, are now moving deeper into entertainment spaces as venues and ticketing partners search for ways to maintain attendance while consumers tighten budgets.
Since opening in 1999 with a performance from Luciano Pavarotti, the 21,000-capacity venue has become one of the country’s most prominent touring destinations. In recent years, it has hosted everyone from Billie Eilish and TWICE to RÜFÜS DU SOL, while also becoming a regular stop for sporting events, family productions and large-scale comedy tours.
The arena’s scale remains a major draw. More than 1.1 million people pass through the venue annually, and recent milestones, including ranking among the world’s top-grossing arenas and recording its 15 millionth ticket sale during Linkin Park’s 2026 tour, underscore its continued importance in the touring ecosystem.
A visible transformation is already underway, with exterior signage, interior branding and venue-wide updates expected in the coming months. Until those changes are complete, events will continue operating under the Qudos Bank Arena name.
