Sphere Entertainment is officially taking its immersive venue concept global after securing a massive $1.7 billion investment from Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism to build the first Sphere location outside the United States.
The new venue, titled Sphere Abu Dhabi, will be constructed on Yas Island and is expected to open by the end of 2029. The project marks the company’s most ambitious international expansion to date, following the success of the original Sphere venue, which debuted in 2023.
According to the announcement, the Abu Dhabi government will fully fund the construction phase, allowing Sphere Entertainment to expand through a franchise-style model rather than directly financing the project itself. The arrangement grants Abu Dhabi access to Sphere’s proprietary design systems, immersive technologies and intellectual property.
The upcoming venue is expected to mirror the scale of the Las Vegas Sphere, with a projected capacity of approximately 20,000 people. Plans call for the space to host immersive original productions, large-scale concert residencies and branded events blending international entertainment with local creative initiatives.
Officials say the project will also spotlight Emirati culture through specialized Sphere Experiences, concerts featuring regional artists and large-scale visual installations displayed across the venue’s massive exterior LED surface known as the Exosphere.
James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, described the Abu Dhabi expansion as the first step toward creating a worldwide network of Sphere venues. Dolan said Abu Dhabi’s growing role as a global entertainment and cultural hub made it a natural fit for the company’s international ambitions.
The development adds to Yas Island’s rapidly expanding entertainment footprint. The destination already hosts attractions including Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, while a future Disney resort has also been announced for the area.
Sphere Entertainment’s rapid growth has been fueled by high-profile concert residencies from acts including Eagles, Phish, Backstreet Boys and Kenny Chesney. Metallica is also set to launch a major residency at the Las Vegas venue later this year.
