Ed Sheeran is officially closing the chapter on one of the most successful label partnerships in modern pop music.
The British singer-songwriter has parted ways with Atlantic and Asylum Records after spending the last 15 years under the Warner Music Group umbrella. Rather than framing the move as fallout, Sheeran described it as a natural evolution and a reset after years of operating at the highest level in the global music industry.
In a message shared with fans, the artist reflected on how dramatically his life has changed since signing his first deal as a teenager. What began with open-mic performances and couch surfing in London eventually transformed into a career that would redefine the scale of streaming-era pop stardom.
Sheeran first connected with future collaborator Ed Howard while still an unknown artist playing tiny venues across the city. That early relationship became the foundation for a partnership that helped launch a remarkable commercial run beginning with 2011’s “Plus”. Over the next decade and a half, Sheeran evolved into one of music’s most dominant forces, selling more than 170 million albums worldwide and collecting billions of streams across digital platforms.
His catalog became packed with era-defining releases, from “Multiply” and “Divide” to “Equals” and “Subtract”. The success of “Divide” in particular cemented his place in music history, breaking streaming records upon release and powering a world tour that became one of the highest-grossing concert runs ever recorded.
Even while operating at stadium scale, Sheeran has increasingly hinted at a desire to reconnect with a more stripped-back creative identity.
Despite the split, both Sheeran and Warner executives spoke warmly about their long-running relationship, emphasizing mutual respect rather than tension. Warner will continue overseeing Sheeran’s existing catalog, while the artist moves forward independently for future projects.
