BBC Radio 6 Music is expanding its digital offering with the launch of Indie Forever, a new 24-hour BBC Sounds stream dedicated to indie music spanning the 1980s through today.
The station will launch on July 22, featuring a playlist centered on indie music from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and beyond, with approximately 70% of tracks coming from UK artists.
Leading the weekday schedule is The Morning Session with Steve Lamacq and Felix White, airing each morning and drawing inspiration from Radio 1’s influential Evening Session. The program will explore the artists, labels, movements and cultural moments that helped define British indie music.
The launch lineup also includes several original and archive programs, including Indie Forever Disco hosted by Beth Ditto, City Soundtracks with Emily Pilbeam, classic shows from Jarvis Cocker, curated artist archive collections, and repeat broadcasts of The Rise and Fall of The Smiths and The Rise and Fall and Rise Again of Oasis.
BBC Radio 6 Music Head Samantha Moy described the new stream as a dedicated destination for indie fans.
As part of the launch, City Soundtracks will be produced in partnership with Music Venue Trust and BBC Introducing, highlighting independent venues across the UK.
Actor and comedian Sophie Willan will provide voiceovers throughout the stream.
BBC Radio 6 Music will celebrate the launch with a simulcast of the inaugural edition of The Morning Session, followed by a curated Indie Forever playlist on BBC Sounds.
