LOS ANGELES, May 19, 2026— The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced today that Gustavo Dudamel will be honored with two lifetime titles as his historic 17-year run as Music & Artistic Director officially draws to a close this August.
Upon completing his tenure, Dudamel will assume the roles of Artistic and Cultural Laureate of the LA Phil, as well as Founding Director and Conductor Laureate of Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA). Far from a quiet farewell before he takes over the New York Philharmonic in September, these newly created positions ensure that his signature energy will remain deeply embedded in Southern California.
Under this new framework, Dudamel will maintain a highly active, long-term presence in Los Angeles by conducting at Walt Disney Concert Hall, guiding his deeply cherished YOLA initiative, and spearheading major artistic co-commissions—including upcoming pieces by Ellen Reid and Zosha di Castri. He will also curate a brand-new, genre-less annual festival at the Hollywood Bowl designed to blend orchestral traditions with artists from all over the world.
A Transformative 17-Year West Coast Legacy
Dudamel’s departure marks the end of an era that fundamentally reshaped classical music’s relationship with the public. Over nearly two decades, he expanded the traditional boundaries of the orchestra, bringing the LA Phil and YOLA to massive commercial platforms like the Super Bowl, the Academy Awards, and Coachella.
His time in Los Angeles was defined by an aggressive commitment to contemporary music and community access:
- The Premieres: Personally conducted 62 world premieres of commissioned works.
- The Initiatives: Spearheaded the Pan-American Music Initiative, which alone produced 30 new commissions.
- The Landmark Projects: Led massive, critically acclaimed stagings at Walt Disney Concert Hall, including the Mahler Project and a collaboration with Deaf West Theatre for Fidelio.
- The Education Frontier: Founded YOLA, establishing multiple neighborhood music sites and opening the permanent Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center, designed by the late Frank Gehry.
The Future of the LA Phil Podium
The creation of Dudamel’s laureate roles marks the latest piece of a massive leadership evolution for the orchestra. The LA Phil’s future artistic programming will be steered by a formidable collective of musical minds.
Dudamel will join a leadership roster that includes recently appointed Creative Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, Conductor-in-Residence Anna Handler, Creative Chair John Adams, Creative Chair for Jazz Herbie Hancock, Artist Collaborator Emmanuelle Haïm, and Conductor Emeritus Zubin Mehta.
While the baton is officially being passed, Dudamel made it clear that his heart remains in Southern California. Reflecting on his time under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl and watching YOLA transform young lives, the conductor noted that these experiences changed him forever, stating that he looks forward to a future of dreaming, creating, and serving the communities of Los Angeles.
