Warner Music Group (WMG) and AI music platform Udio have announced a “landmark agreement” that formally resolves their copyright infringement litigation. The settlement includes a licensing deal for a “next-generation” AI-powered creation, listening, and discovery platform set to launch in 2026.
The agreement spans WMG’s recorded music and publishing businesses, creating new revenue streams while ensuring artist work remains protected. WMG CEO Robert Kyncl said the collaboration aligns with their “broader efforts to responsibly unlock AI’s potential.”
The news arrived just an hour after WMG announced a separate partnership with Stability AI to advance the responsible use of AI in music creation.
Industry Pivot to Licensed AI
The settlement with Udio follows similar action taken by Universal Music Group (UMG), which also settled its lawsuit last month and signed a licensing deal for a platform launching in 2026. These agreements mark a significant pivot for the major labels, coming just over a year after the RIAA sued both Udio and rival AI platform Suno for “mass infringement.”
While WMG and UMG have resolved their claims against Udio, the majors and entities like Denmark’s Koda and Germany’s GEMA continue to pursue copyright claims against Suno. This conflict persists even as Suno recently announced a $250 million raise at a $2.45 billion valuation.
Udio’s Next-Generation Service
Udio stated that its reimagined subscription service will introduce a suite of creative experiences, enabling users to make remixes, covers, and new songs using the voices and compositions of participating creators. A key component is the commitment to ensuring artists and songwriters are properly credited and paid.
Ahead of the 2026 launch, Udio will also roll out expanded protections and measures designed to safeguard the rights of creators. Udio Co-Founder and CEO Andrew Sanchez called the collaboration a “significant milestone in our mission to redefine how AI and the music industry evolve together.”
