Latin American cinema is celebrating: 25 years after its premiere, the acclaimed debut feature by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Amores Perros, continues to resonate culturally. Within the framework of an Anniversary Screening and Concert held at the iconic Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Iñárritu himself announced an exciting series of musical developments that revive the strength of this masterpiece. The highlight: the film’s legendary soundtrack will be released for the first time in vinyl format, alongside special digital editions.
A Legendary Soundtrack in a Deluxe Format
Considered a milestone in Latin American Cinema, the Amores Perros soundtrack is as complex and passionate as the film itself. The score was composed by the prolific Gustavo Santaolalla, whose music Iñárritu discovered and fell in love with “at first listen” with the piece Ronroco. Furthermore, the musical curation by Lynn Fainchtein brought together a constellation of stars, including songs inspired by the film by artists like Café Tacvba, Julieta Venegas, Control Machete, Ely Guerra, and many others. This first vinyl edition, which will be available in three versions—including a Deluxe 3LP red vinyl gatefold—features a remastering process overseen by Santaolalla and Anibal Kerpel.

Both Iñárritu and Santaolalla have underscored the importance of the music in the film’s narrative tapestry. Santaolalla mentioned that the collaboration was a “school,” citing Iñárritu’s “total” vision, whose eye “encompasses every detail,” including the surgical precision regarding “when the music should be present, when it should disappear.” The impact of this celebration isn’t limited to audio: the film will also be celebrating with the re-release of official music videos in HD, such as “Me Van A Matar” by Julieta Venegas and “Aviéntame” by Café Tacvba, the latter directed by Iñárritu.
