Spotify is entering a new chapter in its music leadership. After seven years with the company, Senior Executive David Kaefer is stepping down. His exit marks the end of a tenure that included overseeing music licensing, partnerships, and the launch of Spotify’s audiobook business. Moreover, the move comes as the streaming giant prepares for broader executive changes at the very top.
David Kaefer’s Seven-Year Legacy at Spotify
Kaefer joined Spotify in 2018 after a career at Microsoft. Since then, he has become a central figure in shaping the company’s music and audiobook strategy. In 2023, he led the launch of Spotify’s audiobook business. Later that year, he took on the role of VP, Global Leader of Music and Audiobooks. Reflecting on his time at the company, Kaefer explained that he will now focus on advising and investing in technology, media, and sustainability. In addition, he plans to work closer to home on the U.S. West Coast. He expressed gratitude to Spotify’s leadership team, including Daniel Ek, Alex Norström, and Gustav Söderström, as well as to his colleagues and industry partners.

Meanwhile, Charlie Hellman will step into Kaefer’s role as SVP and Global Head of Music. Hellman, a Spotify veteran since 2011, has played a pivotal role in building the U.S. product team, Spotify for Artists, and fan engagement tools. Furthermore, he has overseen music policy initiatives such as Loud & Clear and anti-fraud protections. In his memo, Norström praised Hellman’s ability to think strategically, advocate for artists, and collaborate across the industry. He described him as the “ideal leader for the Music organization of tomorrow.”
A Broader Leadership Transition at Spotify
This leadership transition also coincides with even larger changes at Spotify. Founder and CEO Daniel Ek will step down in January 2026 to become Executive Chairman. At the same time, Norström and Söderström will take over as co-CEOs. These shifts, therefore, signal a new era for Spotify as it continues to scale its music business and expand its global influence.
In summary, Kaefer’s departure and Hellman’s appointment highlight Spotify’s ongoing evolution at a critical moment for the music industry. By centralizing music functions under Hellman’s leadership, the company aims to strengthen partnerships, support artists, and drive innovation. For Spotify, the beat goes on—just with a new conductor at the helm.
