Universal Music Publishing Group is placing one of the industry’s fastest-evolving regions under new leadership as it looks to deepen its presence across Asia’s increasingly influential music markets.
UMPG has appointed Sunita Kaur as President of Asia, putting the longtime technology and media executive in charge of overseeing operations across the region from her Singapore base. Reporting directly to Chairman and CEO Jody Gerson, Kaur enters the role at a moment when Asia is a central growth engine for the global music business.
The appointment signals more than a leadership change; it reflects the continued convergence between music, technology, streaming ecosystems and creator economies. Kaur’s background sits squarely at that intersection.
Before joining UMPG, Kaur spent years moving between major technology platforms and digital media companies, building expertise in platform growth, monetization and regional expansion. Her resume includes senior leadership positions at Twitch, Spotify, Facebook, Microsoft and Forbes, creating a career path that mirrors how modern music publishing increasingly operates: globally connected, platform-driven and deeply tied to digital infrastructure.
Her experience at Spotify may prove especially relevant. During nearly seven years with the company, Kaur helped oversee expansion efforts across Southeast Asia and later led regional revenue strategy and commercial partnerships during a period when streaming adoption accelerated rapidly across Asian markets.
More recently, Kaur has operated across advisory and investment spaces, consulting with music companies, platforms and venture capital firms while also serving as Executive-in-Residence at Singapore Management University.
In announcing the appointment, company leadership repeatedly pointed to digital growth and songwriter development, two priorities likely to define Kaur’s tenure.
