Originating from San Luis Potosí, Mexico, Angel Lopez spread his legacy worldwide, often attributed to his passion and enduring love for his craft. A violinist and vocalist by trade, Lopez never failed to extend far beyond his comfort level, taking up other instruments simply through a genuine love of music.
Today, May 29th, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán posted a heartfelt sentiment, announcing his passing.
Just a few days ago, on May 25th, both Lopez and Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán shared a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover medical expenses while also announcing his cancer diagnosis. A father of three, Lopez’s world was full of love and support from both within his family and throughout the music community. Born April 28, 1987, the artist passed away at only 39-years-old.
Within the description of the fundraiser, organizer Ernesto Silva wrote, “With his violin and his voice, he has brought smiles, nostalgia and pride to countless stages.”
In many ways, Silvia’s words perfectly summarize the brilliance of who Lopez was, not only as an artist but also as a person.
Joining the group in the summer of 2018, Lopez always strove to share the richness of mariachi music far beyond the stage, and dedicated his life to preserving and celebrating a genre rooted in Mexican culture. In every performance, with a bright, lively smile on his face, he carried deep traditions with him, while inspiring a new generation of Mexican artists to chase their dreams.
Throughout his career, the consistent through line was music. Long before becoming known as a member of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, Lopez spent years building his career across Mexico’s mariachi scene. In his early days, he got his start in Mexico City. Partnering with local groups like Mariachi Gallos de México de Felipe Martínez and Mariachi Sonidos de América, he focused on honing his skills and connecting with his Mexican roots, ones that he would later take to a much larger scale. Arguably, one of the largest aspects of growth was the ability to work with fellow talented musicians, influencing his future work and placing himself at the forefront of the mariachi scene.
Seeking new opportunities, he shortly went on and toured for five years with Juan Gabriel’s Mariachi de Mi Tierra, establishing himself as a skilled violinist and vocalist, while having the chance to grow far beyond where he started. His place in the group put him in direct contact with one of Mexico’s most successful songwriters and vocalists. With Gabriel’s track record of selling out shows, Lopez’s career skyrocketed, with more eyes on him than ever.
Gabriel trusted in Lopez’s skillset, and he became a frequent soloist. This shift elevated Lopez, allowing him to share his art worldwide, along with opening endless doors. Following Gabriel’s passing, Lopez was welcomed with open arms into the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán family.
Known for his unwavering dedication, he quickly became a symbol of pride for mariachi fans across the globe. His ability to connect with audiences through voice and violin made for a memorable and rich performance, one that lingers with viewers. These moments will continue to resonate long after his passing.
In Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán’s words, “Thank you for so much music and for putting Mexico’s name high, Maestro Angel. His legacy will continue to resonate in every note.”
While Angel Lopez may be gone, his remarkable life, artistry and impact will continue to live on- one note, melody and memory at a time.
