SoundCloud is leaning further into fan-driven engagement with the launch of a new feature that allows artists to release music exclusively to their followers before making it widely available.
The tool, dubbed “Follower Exclusive Releases,” is available to Artist Pro users and enables creators to lock tracks behind a simple follow. The gated releases can be temporary, offering early access ahead of a broader rollout, or permanent, giving dedicated fans access to music that may never reach other platforms.
To introduce the feature, SoundCloud partnered with Chris Stussy, who previewed his track “What makes you feel…” exclusively for followers ahead of his upcoming album “Lost, Found & Forgotten.” The DJ, who built much of his early audience on the platform, framed the release as a way to give back to longtime listeners who have supported his journey.
The move reflects SoundCloud’s ongoing push to differentiate itself through community interaction. Unlike traditional streaming services, the platform has long emphasized direct artist-to-fan connection, through real-time comments, reposts, and messaging. This latest feature builds on that foundation, offering artists a new way to reward their most engaged audience while testing new material and building anticipation.
For creators, the appeal lies in flexibility. Exclusive drops can function as early demos, surprise releases, or strategic teasers, helping to generate momentum before a full campaign. For fans, it adds a layer of access, turning a simple follow into a gateway for unreleased or early music.
The launch arrives as SoundCloud continues to position itself as an alternative to traditional streaming economics. Under CEO Eliah Seton, the company has pushed toward more artist-friendly revenue models, including allowing creators to retain 100% of their distribution royalties.
With a catalog now exceeding 500 million tracks and a growing suite of creator tools, SoundCloud’s latest feature underscores a broader industry shift: away from passive listening and toward deeper, more interactive fan relationships.
