A Direct Path for Creators
TIDAL has introduced a major update aimed at empowering independent artists: Upload, a new tool that allows creators and rights-holders to place their own original tracks directly onto the platform. The feature gives musicians more control than ever, letting them upload audio files, edit metadata, customize cover art, and immediately share music through TIDAL’s app or web player. Upload also includes basic analytics, allowing users to track plays and listener engagement.
A Beta Feature With Clear Limitations
Upload remains in its Beta phase, and there are a few restrictions artists should know. Tracks must be under 5GB, each creator can upload up to 200 files, and uploaded songs currently do not generate royalties. Even so, the update marks a significant shift: artists can now bypass distributors and release music directly—so long as the content is fully original, legally owned, and free of samples or copyrighted material.
One major perk is that publicly shared tracks can be listened to by non-TIDAL subscribers, making it a useful tool for showcasing demos, unreleased cuts, or special content to fans, labels, and collaborators.
How to Upload
TIDAL has made the process simple:
- Tap the Upload icon (⬆).
- Hit the Add button (+).
- Select a track from your device.
By default, tracks appear on your public profile, but users can switch them to private before uploading.
Spotlight: TIDAL’s New Editorial Pathway
Alongside Upload, TIDAL launched Spotlight, a program that reviews publicly shared uploads for potential playlist or in-app placement. Selected artists can earn $100 per day for each editorial feature—along with heightened visibility on a global stage. Spotlight selections are based on quality and how well the track fits TIDAL’s curated playlists.
A Big Contest for Independent Artists
TIDAL has also introduced Upload Headliners, a contest running from November 13 through December 31. Ten U.S.-based artists will each receive $100,000 to support their next creative chapter. Tracks uploaded before November 13 can still qualify with a simple form submission, as long as they’re public. Winners must have a linked Cash App account to receive the award.
A New Era of Creative Control
By blending Upload, Spotlight, and Headliners, TIDAL continues to position itself as an “artist-first” platform. While the new feature doesn’t yet support royalty payouts, it offers something just as valuable: more control, more exposure, and more flexibility for independent artists looking to share their work on their own terms.
