The Africa Rising Music Conference has announced that Australia and Uganda will be the official focus countries for its sixth edition, taking place in Johannesburg on May 22 and 23, 2026. This move, backed by the PRS Foundation for the third consecutive year, represents a significant push to bridge the gap between African emerging scenes and established global markets. By bringing curated delegations of Australian artists and executives to South Africa, the conference is positioning itself as the primary vehicle for Southern Hemisphere industry collaboration.
Strategic Partnerships and Digital Scale
A key highlight for the 2026 conference is the new strategic partnership with the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO). This collaboration joins an existing partnership with the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) to address critical issues of intellectual property rights and artist sustainability.
The conference will also spotlight high growth genres such as Lekompo and Maskandi. Lekompo, originating from Limpopo, has recently seen rapid growth through digital platforms, with artists like Shandesh and Kharishma recording over 70 million cumulative streams. This focus illustrates how regional genres are translating local popularity into national and international audiences through streaming led discovery.
Innovation and Ethical AI
Building on its 2025 foundations, ARMC 2026 will introduce an AI Think Tank Roundtable in Johannesburg. In collaboration with partners like Paradise Worldwide and the Association For Electronic Music (AFEM), the session will bring together technology leaders to discuss:
- Ethical AI use and fair attribution for creators.
- Protection for independent artists in the digital space.
- The development of Pan African music technology ecosystems.
The Community Access Pledge
In an effort to drive inclusivity, ARMC has launched a Community Access Pledge alongside partners like Bridges for Music and shesaid.so South Africa. The initiative allows brands to donate tickets to aspiring artists and entrepreneurs who would otherwise be unable to attend, fostering a more accessible entry point for the next generation of industry leaders.
