Los Angeles, California (July 15, 2025)- Teatro Grattacielo announces the world premiere of Generación Perdida, a powerful new monodrama-opera by Mexican composer Jorge Sosa, premiering Friday, July 18, 2025, at La MaMa’s The Downstairs Theater in New York City. Based on the deeply moving poetry of Mexican-Colombian writer Javier Moro Hernandez, this singular production transforms trauma into art, drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis of forced disappearances and kidnappings across Mexico and Latin America.
Rather than confronting audiences with violence directly, Generación Perdida offers a space for contemplation through the expressive fusion of poetry and music. Sung in Spanish with English supertitles, the performance invites attendees to reflect on memory, resilience, and the collective responsibility to remember those who have been silenced. With Tianhui Ng conducting and Elena Arroz directing, the premiere promises an emotionally charged, visually evocative evening.
“In Generación Perdida, I seek to address the theme of violence as an act of remembrance,” shares Javier Moro Hernandez. “Poetry allows us to narrate pain, foster empathy, and honor the journey of victims whose stories too often go untold.”
Composer Jorge Sosa emphasizes the piece’s deeper purpose. “My hope is that this opera ignites a spark—one that leads to reflection, dialogue, and collective action,” he says. “Generación Perdida is a memorial to the countless lives lost. Against the horrors of war and violence, we offer art as an act of defiance, remembrance, and hope.”
Presented by Teatro Grattacielo—a company celebrated for its commitment to reviving forgotten masterpieces and championing innovative, socially relevant works—Generación Perdida exemplifies the organization’s dedication to inclusivity, artistic excellence, and cultural dialogue. The opera is made possible in part by OPERA America’s IDEA Opera Grants program, with support from the Charles and Cerise Jacobs Charitable Foundation and NYC Council Member Eric Bottcher’s Cultural Immigrant Initiative.
The performance takes place at La MaMa’s The Downstairs Theater, located at 66 East 4th Street, New York, NY, at 7:30 PM on Friday, July 18.
