Los Angeles, California (August 1, 2025)- Sofia Monroy is bringing a new life to her debut album, ‘Morena’, with the release of three reimagined tracks in an incredible live session format. The audio and video, now available on all platforms, showcase a raw and authentic side of her music that she believes is best captured in a live setting.
“I’m a huge fan of live music; that’s how I got my start,” Sofia explains. “There’s something in a live performance that you don’t find in a super clean, studio-produced song. There’s a raw and very authentic quality to it.”
The live session features a trio of songs: “Morena (Live Session),” “Para Que Vuelvas (Live Session),” and a spectacular new version of “Diente de León – Tumbado (Live Session).” The latter is a bold reinterpretation of the original track, now infused with the Tumbado style, a subgenre of the popular regional Mexican sound that has been dominating charts both inside and outside of Mexico.
Sofia shared the personal stories behind her song selection. “‘Para Que Vuelvas’ was originally more organic, not as produced, without the electronic elements it has now. That raw version always stayed with me.” Similarly, the Tumbado version of “Diente de León” was a return to her initial idea for the song. “The first idea for ‘Diente de León’ was to do it more like this, a Tumbado. That’s how we wrote it, inspired by these sounds. So I said, ‘Well, here I can do that.'”
This embrace of regional Mexican music is deeply personal for Sofia. She reveals that the genre makes her “very happy” and helps her feel at home, especially while in Sweden. It connects her to her Mexican roots and childhood memories, reinforcing the bicultural identity that defines her artistry. She points out the strong relationship between regional Mexican music and Scandinavian folk ballads, or visor, noting their similar use of storytelling, poetic lyrics, and instrumentation that often features guitar and accordion.
The live sessions serve as a testament to Sofia’s unique ability to blend her Mexican and Swedish heritage, creating a sound that challenges expectations and delivers an authentic piece of her personal universe.
Sofia has had a landmark year, with the March release of her debut album, ‘Morena,’ through Veo Sonora/Universal Music Mexico. The same week, she performed as the opening act for Zayn in Mexico City, playing for over 53,000 fans. In June, she took ‘Morena’ to Sweden, performing in Stockholm and her hometown of Luleå, further showcasing her music to a global audience.
Born in Mexico City to a Mexican father and a Swedish mother, Sofia’s bicultural background has shaped her artistic journey. Her career took off after appearing on the Swedish talent show IDOL at age 14. This experience led her to reconnect with Mexico, eventually signing with Universal Music Mexico and moving back to the country. Her debut album, ‘Morena,’ is a heartfelt letter to her roots and the two worlds she carries within her, making it as personal and eclectic as Sofia herself. At just 25 years old, Sofia Monroy is poised to become a major international artist, with her debut album serving as a powerful introduction to her world.
