Reservoir Media has recently hit a new joint venture with Jamaican star Cordell “Skatta” Burrell and the reggae publisher Abood Music. Skatta and Abood Music have a shared interest in “further advancing the new generation of Jamaica’s music scene” by signing and developing new Jamaican artists and songwriters.
“I’m excited to announce this partnership with Reservoir. This venture integrates Abood’s veteran catalog strength with Reservoir’s frontline creative leadership and international infrastructure, ensuring Jamaican music reaches wider audiences and greater commercial heights,” says Skatta.
Abood Music is a long-standing publisher of Jamaican and international music, started by the Jamdown Records founder Othman Mukhlis in 2001. Abood Music has a vast history of producing global hits, boasting more than 200 million albums sold with over 120 Jamaican clients.
Skatta is a Jamaican superstar, as well as a songwriter, media celebrity, producer, and influencer who has been previously published by Abood Music in the past. He has helped with the 2003 hit dancehall record “Coolie Dance Rhythm”, one that Reservoir has published in the U.S. through Abood since 2020. The hit had earned an international popularity status several featured samples in global hits by Whitney Houston, Lil Jon, Pitbull, Nina Sky, Fatman Scoop, and many more.
“We look forward to supporting the voices of established and developing Jamaican creators alike, as we work to amplify their artistry, expand their global reach, and continue to elevate Jamaican music on the world stage,” says Rell Lafargue of Reservoir.
Another comment on the deal from Skatta, “I particularly want to thank Rell Lafargue and Spek, who have been instrumental in supporting “Coolie Dance Rhythm” and driving the billion plus views associated with its global renaissance. Due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica, I’m also honored to share that the first transaction of our joint venture is a substantial donation to support relief efforts. With this donation, we hope to signal our meaningful commitment not just to the creators we sign, but also to Jamaica and its people as a whole.”
