San Juan’s Caimito community is celebrating a milestone. The Caimito Gym, once worn down, has reopened as a modern and safe sports center. This $425,000 transformation came through a collaboration between the Municipality of San Juan, Mayor Miguel A. Romero Lugo, urban music star Myke Towers, and the Young Kingz Foundation. Together, they turned the gym into a hub for health, discipline, and community pride.
Partnership Fuels Major Upgrades

The upgrades went far beyond appearances. The Municipality replaced the roof, bathrooms, lighting, and doors, while also paving the exterior. Young Kingz Foundation added painting, flooring for boxing areas, repaired windows, and brand-new equipment. Now the gym features treadmills, weights, bicycles, and a fully renovated boxing ring. Mayor Romero Lugo highlighted the impact: “The Caimito Gym is an example of the transformative power of sports and what we can achieve by working in partnership with the private sector.”
For Myke Towers, the project is personal. “I grew up knowing how important it is to have a safe place to train and grow,” he said. “This gym represents much more than boxing; it’s a space where young people can find discipline, support, and motivation to pursue their dreams.” His words echo the mission of Young Kingz Foundation. President Derick Luna confirmed that Caimito is just the first step in a larger effort to bring similar projects to other communities.
Honoring Legacy, Building the Future
The reopening also honored Freddy Trinidad Muriel, longtime administrator of the gym and a mentor to many Puerto Rican boxers. His recognition tied the project to the rich history of the sport while pointing toward a bright future. At the same time, the Municipality announced renovations in six other gyms, including Las Curias, Falu, Barrio Obrero, Venezuela, Playita, and Timothee. Each site will provide safe, modern spaces for youth development across San Juan.
The renewed Caimito Gym now stands as a symbol of resilience and collaboration. With every new investment, San Juan reinforces its belief in the dreams of its young people. By combining resources, vision, and community spirit, the city is building more than gyms—it is nurturing opportunity, discipline, and hope.
