A Rediscovered Moment from Pop History
Fans of George Michael will soon get a rare glimpse into one of the most iconic moments of the singer’s career. A previously unseen concert film and companion live album from Michael’s 1988 Faith World Tour have been discovered, restored, and are scheduled for release later this year. The project promises to bring audiences back to the height of Michael’s global fame during the late 1980s, when his groundbreaking album Faith turned him into one of the biggest pop stars in the world.
The concert film, titled George Michael: The Faith Tour, was filmed in Paris, France, at the Palace Omnisports de Paris-Bercy during the tour in 1988. Directed by Michael’s longtime collaborators Andy Morahan and David Austin, the footage was captured using 14 cameras and has now been carefully restored and remastered for modern audiences. The film is expected to receive a theatrical release before becoming available on streaming platforms and home video formats.
Celebrating George Michael’s Enduring Legacy
Adding further depth to the project is a short introductory film titled Finding Faith, directed by Mary McCartney. The piece offers what producers describe as “an intimate introduction contextualising the tour’s cultural significance, through a sensitive and cinematic lens.” The film also features a rare voiceover from George Michael taken from an unheard interview, accompanied by previously unseen photographs captured by legendary American photographer Herb Ritt.
Alongside the film, a live album also titled The Faith Tour will be released, featuring 18 tracks from the concerts. The setlist includes songs from Michael’s blockbuster Faith album, selections from his earlier work with Wham!, and several “previously unheard performances.” The late 1980s marked the commercial peak of Michael’s career, with Faith winning Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards and producing four Billboard No. 1 singles: “Faith,” “Father Figure,” “One More Try,” and “Monkey.”
The upcoming release also carries emotional significance for fans. George Michael passed away in 2016 at age 53, and in the years since, his estate has been selective about releasing archival material. This newly restored project offers a rare opportunity to revisit the electrifying energy of the Faith era while celebrating the enduring legacy of one of pop music’s most influential artists.
