With the awards ceremony just hours away, Day 5 offered a thoughtful reflection on the people, stories, and cultural moments that shape the music industry.
The day began at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre with the Special Merit Awards Ceremony, which celebrated musical legends Carlos Santana, Chaka Khan, Cher, Fela Kuti, Paul Simon, and Whitney Houston for Lifetime Achievement. Bernie Taupin, Eddie Palmieri, and Sylvia Rhone were recognized with Trustees Awards for their lasting influence behind the scenes, while John Chowning was honored with the Technical Grammy Award for his groundbreaking innovations. The Harry Belafonte Best Song for Social Change Award went to “Ice Cream Man,” highlighting music’s role in activism, and the Music Educator Award was presented to Jennifer Jimenez, stressing the importance of education in fostering future generations of artists.
That evening, the Pre-Grammy Gala and Salute to Industry Icons honored REPUBLIC Records’ founders, Monte and Avery Lipman, for their profound impact on contemporary music. Academy Proud followed, centering Queer voices and artistry with dynamic appearances by Sasha Colby, Zara Larsson, ZEE MACHINE, and DJ Cor.Ece, reinforcing the Academy’s dedication to diversity and visibility for all creative communities.
