Los Angeles, California (July 31, 2025)- The Foo Fighters have announced a significant change in their lineup, bringing on Ilan Rubin, drummer for Nine Inch Nails, ahead of their upcoming tour dates in Indonesia, Singapore, and Japan, as confirmed by Billboard. This move sees Rubin stepping in to replace Josh Freese, who departed from Dave Grohl’s rock band in May. Freese had only joined the Foo Fighters in May 2023, taking the place left by the late Taylor Hawkins.
In a surprising turn, Freese is now reportedly set to join Nine Inch Nails, filling the spot vacated by Rubin for their “Peel it Back” tour. This isn’t Freese’s first stint with Nine Inch Nails, as he previously drummed for the band from 2005 to 2008. It remains uncertain whether Rubin’s role with the Foo Fighters will be permanent or if he’s joining solely for the upcoming tour.
The Foo Fighters are gearing up for their first performances since September 28, 2024, when they played at the Southside Music Festival in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Their international tour kicks off on October 2 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Two days later, they are slated to headline the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Singapore. The band then heads to Japan for two nights at Saitama’s Super Arena on October 7 and 8, followed by a concert in Kobe on October 10. The Foo Fighters will return to North America on November 14 to perform at Corona Capital in Mexico City.
Meanwhile, Nine Inch Nails is preparing to launch their arena tour next month, with support from Boys Noize. Their tour begins on August 6 in Oakland, California, before moving north to Portland, Oregon, for a show at the Moda Center on August 8.
