DistroKid, one of the largest independent music distributors, is moving beyond audio and video distribution. The company has launched Direct, a platform that lets artists sell merchandise directly to fans. Announced on October 29, the service gives musicians simple tools to monetize creativity beyond streaming. Furthermore, it highlights how distribution platforms are evolving into full-service hubs for independent artists.
How Direct Works
Direct allows artists to set up online stores with items like T-shirts, tote bags, and mugs featuring album artwork. In addition, DistroKid manages production and shipping through on-demand manufacturing, which removes the burden of inventory management. Artists keep 100% of the revenue, while the service costs only $6 per month. As a result, musicians can focus on their craft without worrying about logistics or upfront costs.
Matthew Ogle, Chief Product Officer, said Direct is “one more way DistroKid helps artists at every step.” Early users have echoed this sentiment. For example, jazz musician Devin Gray called the process “seamless.” Similarly, singer/songwriter Raye Zaragoza praised its sustainability and financial freedom for indie artists. Meanwhile, Los Angeles–based artist Jeddy Knox said launching merch was “fast and painless,” proving that the platform lowers barriers for creators who once found merch too complicated.
Competing in a Crowded Market
The launch also underscores DistroKid’s broader strategy to diversify. Founded in 2013, the New York company claims to handle 30–40% of new music releases worldwide. Moreover, Direct builds on Bandzoogle technology, which DistroKid acquired in 2023, and positions the company against competitors like Bandcamp. Bandcamp, now owned by Songtradr, has long offered similar tools. However, DistroKid’s approach emphasizes simplicity, affordability, and artist control. In addition, the company plans to expand merch options and add fan engagement features, signaling that this is only the beginning.
Ultimately, Direct empowers musicians to connect with fans through merchandise while keeping full control of earnings. By combining affordability, sustainability, and ease of use, the platform strengthens DistroKid’s role as a one-stop hub for artists. Therefore, the launch not only benefits independent musicians but also reshapes the competitive landscape of direct-to-fan services.
