The music industry is mourning the loss of a major behind the scenes force. English singer and songwriter Talay Riley has tragically passed away following a stabbing incident in London. He was 35 years old.
According to a statement from the Metropolitan Police, Riley, whose real name was Mark Yinka Orabiyi, was discovered in a garden with stab wounds around 9 am local time on Friday. Emergency services pronounced him dead at the scene. A second victim in the attack suffered non life threatening injuries. Authorities have arrested three individuals in connection with the murder, though two have been released without charge and one has been granted bail as the investigation continues.
While average listeners might not have known his name, millions have heard his work. Orabiyi was a Grammy-winning, multi-platinum creator who helped shape the sound of modern pop and contemporary R&B. His impressive catalog of hits included writing Last Dance for Dua Lipa, co writing the massive hit Young Dumb and Broke for Khalid, and working on Lights On for H.E.R. The latter contribution earned him a Grammy Award when her self-titled album won Best R&B Album. Over the course of his career, he also penned tracks for global stars like Britney Spears, Jason Derulo, Jessie J, and Nick Jonas, all while releasing his own solo material under the name Riley.
Following the news, heartfelt tributes flooded social media from his family and his manager, Cleo Amedume. His brother, fellow songwriter Michael Orabiyi, shared a poignant message celebrating his pure heart, deep capacity for love, and generous spirit.
His family noted that the public will fondly remember him for his incredible musical gift, but those who loved him personally will deeply miss his humor and unmistakable presence. Police are currently appealing to the public for any information regarding the incident as the investigation moves forward at pace.
