ARIA, an organization that has helped shape the sound of Australian music across generations is inducting six new inducteers for its Hall of Fame. This is a landmark event celebrating its 20th anniversary. The people who are being included are Gurrumul, Jenny Morris, Kate Ceberano, Spiderbait, The Living End, and Vika & Linda. Gurrumul who has passed on is one of the people who is being featured. He was born blind and raised on Elcho Island in Arnhem Land. He became famous because of his 2008 self-titled album and had performed for among others Queen Elizabeth II and the former US President Barack Obama. Throughout his career, he has also earned 22 ARIA nominations and 10 wins before 2017.
Jenny Morris is also being recognized for his career of performance, songwriting, and advocacy. In fact, she has dubbed herself as one of Australia’s solo artists with albums such as Body and Soul and Shiver. She has played a major leadership role at APRA AMCOS, and done extensive charity work.
Kate Ceberasno is one of the few artists that have remained influential across generations. In total, Ceberano has accrued 31 albums, 57 singles, and five ARIA Awards, and she is also one of a handful of Australian artists to achieve Top 10 albums in five consecutive decades.
Spiderbait, another alternative rock band entered in the Hall of Fame has made an impact on Australia’s 1990s rock scene. The group has been known for their albums like Ivy & the Big Apples and their single “Buy Me a Pony” becoming the first Austrialian song to top the Triple J Hottest 100.
On the other hand, The Living End is being known for three decades as one of Australia’s biggest rock exports. In fact, their self titled album in 1998 is one of the highest-selling Australian rock albums ever created. Songs like “Prisoner of Society” has been played at festivals and radios in the late ’90s and 2000s.
The vocal music duo Vika & Linda has also been inducted in ARIA’s Hall of Fame. They became popular because of their work with The Black Sorrows, being two of Australia’s most powerul live performers.
Just as these artists have identified themselves with the Australian sound, people are leaning towards supporting talent for the next generation.
The 2026 ARIA Awards will happen on Wednesday, November 18th at the Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion celebrating Australian music by being present on Channel 10 and streaming live on Paramount+.
