Spotify is rolling out a new “Verified by Spotify” badge, signaling a shift in how the platform defines artist legitimacy at a time when AI-generated music is rapidly increasing.
Replacing the platform’s former blue checkmark, retired earlier this year, the new badge goes beyond confirming profile ownership. Instead, it’s designed to highlight artists who demonstrate authentic, sustained activity. The light green checkmark will appear on artist profiles and in search results, offering listeners a clearer signal about who’s behind the music.
The change reflects a growing challenge for streaming platforms: distinguishing real artists from AI-driven projects or anonymous content farms. At launch, Spotify says profiles that primarily represent AI-generated or virtual artists will not be eligible. To qualify, artists must show consistent listener engagement, follow platform guidelines and maintain a presence beyond streaming, such as live performances, merchandise, or active social channels.
Spotify also emphasized that verification won’t rely solely on algorithms. Human review will play a role in evaluating whether an artist is operating ethically, adding a layer of judgment to what has traditionally been a technical process.
The rollout is expected to cover the majority of artists users actively search for, though approvals will happen gradually. Importantly, not having the badge doesn’t necessarily mean an artist is ineligible; it may simply mean they haven’t been reviewed yet.
This update is part of a broader push by Spotify to increase transparency. Recent additions include tools that let artists approve releases tied to their profiles and expanded credits that disclose AI involvement in music creation.
As generative AI continues to blur the line between human and machine-made music, Spotify’s new verification system represents an attempt to restore trust.
