Emerging duo Tear Drive has officially entered the alternative scene with the release of their debut EP, Face to Face. The five-track collection, released via the G.Y.R.O. label, functions as a study in contrast, blending expansive, anthemic soundscapes with a gritty, pounding rhythm section. Produced alongside ARIA-Award winner Cody McWaters, the project marks the formal arrival of an act currently transitioning from bedroom recordings to high-stakes studio production.
The EP’s focus track, “Better Off,” serves as the emotional anchor of the project, though its roots trace back long before the band’s official formation. Members Gabe and Nic originally penned the song in their bedrooms at age 17. The track begins with quiet sensitivity before building into a cathartic release, featuring sweeping guitars and a driving rhythm section. To add a cinematic layer to the production, the duo incorporated an improvised cello arrangement and subtle piano melodies, creating a sonic journey that mirrors the vulnerability of the lyrics.
Thematically, Face to Face explores the heavy emotional space between hope and acceptance. The band describes the songwriting as a “push and pull,” focusing on the clarity that often comes after a situation has already reached its breaking point. In discussing the EP’s lyrical direction, the duo noted that there is a “strange sense of safety” found in admitting the truth once a ship has essentially sailed. This sense of confession from a safe distance permeates the entire body of work, making the EP feel both expansive and deeply intimate.
By collaborating with a producer of McWaters’ caliber, Tear Drive has ensured their debut carries a level of polish typically reserved for more established acts. The production on Face to Faceintentionally leans into a cinematic aesthetic, using the juxtaposition of heavy percussion and delicate strings to guide the listener through the EP’s narrative arc. Currently available on all major streaming platforms, the EP positions Gabe and Nic as creators who are effectively bridging the gap between raw, adolescent songwriting and professional, world-building production.
